Weapons is a crucial part of Silat perisai diri training.  To swing around a sword or blunt object is one thing but to skillfully maneuver a weapon as an extension of your body takes  you a notch above the rest.   Weapons training helps the practitioner with coordination, balance and reflex reaction.  In silat perisai diri we have the concept that anything around you can be used as a weapon to effectively defend yourself in a life threatening situation.  The 3 compulsory weapons you are trained in in silat pd are Pisau (knife), Pedang (sword) and Toya (bow staff).
